Specification Alloys
Manufacturers with specific alloy needs come to Aleris. Our specification alloy operations combine various aluminum scrap types with hardeners and other additives to produce alloys and chemical compositions specified by customers for their particular applications.
Aleris purchases large quantities of scrap for the production of specification alloys, which we then deliver directly to customers. Or, a customer can provide Aleris with the scrap to process, which we then return to that customer. Aleris also acquires materials from the open market to produce specification alloy products that we then sell back on the open market.
Specification alloy industries served:
- Automotive
- Small engine
- Appliances
- Electrical and consumer products
Melting
Aleris operates both reverberatory and rotary furnaces. Various alloys and grades of scrap are melted in a furnace to meet certain chemistry requirements to adhere to the alloy specification needed for casting.
Casting
Once the specifications are received from the customer and integrated into our casting operations, the scrap is melted and the molten aluminum alloy is poured into a mold, allowing it to solidify into special shapes:
- Low-profile sow
- Several sizes of ingot
- 2-way sows
- 4-way sows
