Transportation

Aluminum's high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and recyclability make it a perfect material for the transportation industry.  Aleris produces large-sheet and coated aluminum products used in the construction of trucks, trailers, buses, recreational vehicles, rail cars, ships, and boats.

All manufacturers of transportation vehicles focus on low weight to save energy and meet environmental goals. Only the astonishing range of aluminum’s properties can provide the unique combination of strength and weight-saving features to optimize vehicle performance, reliability and cost effectiveness. Aluminum promotes long-term performance, reduces maintenance and downtime, and has a positive impact on the environment. It is easy to repair and provides high residual value.  Lighter commercial vehicles made from aluminum help reduce shipping costs.

In the vehicle market alone, Aleris serves a wide variety of customer applications, including:

Dry freight trailers
Class 7 and 8 trucks
Delivery trucks
Cargo trailers
Emergency vehicles
Horse trailers
Recreational vehicles
Livestock trailers
Pop-up trailers

Refrigerated trailers
Utility vehicles
Composite trailers
Boat trailers
Pull-behind trailers
Grain trailers
Dump trailers
Tanker trailers
Fire trucks

Aleris aluminum coil is used in all major segments of the transportation industry.  And it’s not just plain aluminum.  Customers can choose from standard Aleris colors, custom-matched colors, or specially-developed coating products like Aleris' Ultra Road Shield.

Aleris adds value by providing transportation customers a wide range of unique extruded shapes to meet their individual needs. We also machine semi-finished and finished parts with our modern CNC centers, and assemble sections or complete structures to customer requirements

Alustar®

Alustar® is an AlMg wrought alloy that can be readily used for manufacturing plate, coil, and sturdy extruded parts. Alustar®, while being significantly stronger than the more conventionally used AA5083, demonstrates comparable corrosion resistance, ductility, and weldability. The Aluminum Association has assigned the designation AA5059 to this high-tech Aleris alloy.

Alustar® has outstanding mechanical properties. With the minimum values of alloy AA5083 as a reference, Alustar® improvements include:

  • 26 percent greater yield strength than AA5083 before welding
  • 28 percent greater yield strength than AA5083 after welding

Alustar® has been approved by:

  • ABS Europe LTD
  • Class NK
  • Class NK (1994)
  • Det Norske Veritas  DNV
  • Germanischer Leu GL
  • Loyd´s Register of Shipping LRS
  • Korean Register of Shipping  (HMB06052-AL002)
